An ex Green Beret, in 2001 Larry Broughton founded California-based Broughton Hotels, a leader in the boutique hotel industry. The company’s portfolio now includes nearly 20 hospitality projects throughout California and Chicago, and is about to grow to 65 in 2019 through expanding in the UK.

Larry talks to Ed Andrew about his transition into civilian life, finding his purpose, mentorship, the battles of being an entrepreneur and how love is more important than money. He takes a deep dive on strategy, what a minimum viable proposition really means, the difference between the pursuit of excellence over perfection.

  • on being envious, having money and being miserable, we can have happiness and money, and have to have the right person in your life

 

  • discussing humility and having a beginners mindset, "if you tell me that you an expert then I will treat you like that" (27)  

 

  • when we tie pride and oneself to business performance and net worth we are heading for a cliff - having an intentional sense of curiosity about life we become better versions of themselves (31)

  • discussing if there is ever a good time to start your business, operating his 1st hotel in 2000 and recession, SARS and 9/11 and technology bust - did not have a mentor or board of advisers - discussing asking for help and masterminds, 

 

  • mentors and asking for help - being described as an egomaniac with an inferiority complex, we think we can do what others can’t do - the first step to healing is admitting you have a problem (42)

 

  • discussing what path to choose, picking up a lane, even if you don’t know what you want or where you are going there is power and explore it , but pick a lane

 

  • discussing competitors  - the universe has my back, worrying us using energy I don’t need to deploy - if I walk 

 

  • growing his company, several hundred million $ fund about to deploy - changing mentors as you go through your journey, "get a mentor for the season you are in, towards the season you want to go then set them free" (49)

  • scaling his business and growing from 15 hotels to 65 now - human potential and capacity thas me intrigued, I am a better CEO than my company currently knows - creativity not filled yet - discussing liking the freedom that money brings
